The hunting season is approaching, and for those who hunt with dogs, the preparation starts long before the first shot is fired. A well-trained hunting dog is the result of patient and consistent work – and the right equipment can make training both more effective and safer. A GPS tracker is one of the tools many hunters wait too long to start using, even though it should really be part of the training from the very beginning.
Whether you have a young dog that needs training or an experienced hunting dog that needs to stay in shape, the preparation is all about building endurance, obedience, and cooperation.
Regular training sessions in terrain are invaluable – that’s where the dog learns to work in real conditions, not just on gravel lots or in controlled environments.
Start with shorter sessions and gradually increase the duration as the dog finds its rhythm. Focus on recall and contact with the handler, especially if the dog tends to work far away. A dog that does not return on command during training will not do it during hunting either.
It can be tempting to think of the GPS tracker as something you only bring out once hunting season begins for real. But there are several good reasons to use it already during training. Partly for the dog’s safety – a young dog exploring new terrain can quickly disappear from sight.
But it is also because the tracker gives valuable insight into how the dog actually works.
Through the position history in the MiniFinder Hunter app, you can afterwards see the dog’s movement patterns, how far it has traveled, where it stopped, and which areas it has covered. This provides concrete information to better understand what works well and what needs more training.
MiniFinder Rex includes a vibration command feature that is sent directly through the app to the dog’s tracker. This makes it possible to give silent signals during training without using voice commands or whistles – practical when you want to communicate with the dog at a distance without disturbing the surroundings.
Several dog handlers actively use the vibration function to train recall, turning the tracker into a training tool rather than just a tracking device.
Make sure the tracker is charged, the app is updated, and the subscription is activated before the training sessions begin. It is easy to forget these things in the final preparations before the season starts, but a tracker that does not work when you need it is of no use.
