When the hunting team's previous hunting system was acquired and later discontinued, the team, which manages hunting grounds in Dalarna, Sweden, had to start looking for alternatives for the future of their hunting activities. With around 45 to 50 hunters in the team, it was important to find a solution that worked for everyone, both practically and financially.
The team evaluated several alternatives on the market, but many of the available solutions would have resulted in annual licence costs of around SEK 50,000 for the entire hunting team. For Noah Lovetass and the dog handlers, the choice quickly became clear when comparing costs, hunting apps, features and how easy it was to transfer hunting grounds to a new system.
When we started calculating the costs, it quickly became clear which option made the most sense for us
– Says Noah Lovetass, Dog Handler.
Since many members of the team primarily hunt during the annual moose hunting season, it was difficult to justify spending around SEK 50,000 per year on licence fees alone. With MiniFinder Hunter, the entire hunting team can use the app free of charge, while only the dog handlers need subscriptions for their tracking devices. Today, the team estimates that the switch saves them approximately SEK 40,000 to SEK 50,000 every year compared to other alternatives on the market.
Before making their decision, several alternatives were presented during the hunting team's annual meeting. However, several dog handlers had already tested MiniFinder Rex during the winter season, and the feedback was very positive from the start.
As a result, the discussion was relatively short since many members had already seen how the system performed during real hunting situations. When it was finally time to vote, the decision was unanimous and MiniFinder Hunter and Rex became the hunting team's new solution.
Another important reason for choosing MiniFinder was the feeling that the system already felt familiar. Since MiniFinder had previously manufactured tracking devices for their former solution, the team already had positive experiences with both the products and their performance in the field.
The only thing we really had to do was get new tracking devices and download the app. Then we were ready to go.
– Noah Lovetass
This created confidence in the transition and made the switch to MiniFinder Hunter and Rex much easier. At the same time, the migration turned out to be smoother than expected, as hunting grounds could easily be transferred to the new system without complications or lengthy setup processes.
Today, the team uses seven MiniFinder Rex devices, while the entire hunting team can follow the hunt directly in MiniFinder Hunter without any additional licence costs for individual hunters.
After the switch, the hunting team quickly noticed that MiniFinder Rex provided a completely different level of overview during hunting days compared to what they had previously experienced. For the dog handlers in particular, it became highly valuable to follow their dogs' positions in real time and instantly see how the dogs moved through the hunting areas directly within the app.
The ability to call the dog directly through the tracking device, listen to the dog and even issue commands is especially appreciated in situations where fast communication can make a significant difference. The transition felt more like an upgrade than a complicated replacement of the hunting system.
When MiniFinder later introduced the possibility of trading in older compatible tracking devices, the solution became even more appreciated within the hunting team. This allowed several older units to remain in use within MiniFinder Hunter as backup devices or when hunting together with guest hunters.
We are 100% satisfied with Rex. We haven't found anything that doesn't work. Everything performs exactly as it should.
– Noah Lovetass
For the hunting team, dog tracking devices are about much more than simply following the dogs' work during the hunt. Safety for both dogs and hunters is an important part of every hunting day, especially in areas where dogs may move close to roads or other potentially dangerous locations.
Part of the hunting grounds is crossed by a major road, making it important for the entire hunting team to quickly help monitor the dogs' positions and communicate with stand hunters if situations arise. The ability for everyone in the team to follow the dogs in real time creates an additional layer of safety and helps prevent dangerous situations, accidents and injuries for both dogs and hunters.
For other hunting teams considering a new hunting solution or looking to reduce costs, Noah has a clear message: "It doesn't have to cost a fortune to be good. What we've seen from Rex covers all our needs."
